Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) 

Course Duration

1 week based on 6 trainees per course for Practical Training

Course Purpose

Mid-Region Air Traffic Controllers, will need to have an awareness of the RVSM, implementation criteria and be trained accordingly. Upon completion of the course Air Traffic Controllers are expected to acquire the knowledge of the RVSM concept, its implementation aspects, and to practice simulation exercises in controlling air traffic within the RVSM airspace up to the level in accordance to National and Mid-Regional Requirements.

Course Objective's 

Upon completion of the course, participants should:

  • RVSM airworthiness and operational approval process.
  • height- keeping performance of RVSM approved aircraft.
  • Explain:
      - the general procedures for operations within the Mid-Region RVSM airspace
      - the inter center – coordination requirements of air traffic leaving and/or entering the lateral limits of RVSM airspace.
  • Appreciate the impact of RVSM on existing flight level(s) and route structures.
  • Update and maintain traffic display and FPS to the required standard of accuracy.
  • Apply standards RTF phraseology pertaining to RVSM operations.
  • Maintain the prescribed RVSM separation minima.
  • Monitor known air traffic to provide aircraft concerned with information or advice relative to any significant deviation from their ATC clearances within the RVSM airspace.
  • Be aware of the RVSM flight planning requirements.

Apply contingency procedure in the event of the operations abnormalities, which directly impact on the ability of aircraft to operate in accordance with vertical Navigation performance requirements.

Target population

This course is designed for air traffic (En-route) controllers from an Area Control Centers(ACCs).

Course Outline

The course is based on Three (3) Modules designed to:

  • Aware air traffic controllers of the RVSM regulations and approval requirements of the operators and aircraft intended to operate in RVSM airspace
  • Apply RVSM ATC procedures in Jordan and in Mid-Region RVSM airspace between FL290 and FL410 inclusive.

Course Aim

This course, following by a minimum of one (1) month (subject to the conditions prescribed by Jordan Civil Aviation regulation (JCAR) practical experience working under the supervision of an appropriately rated radar controller will train air traffic controllers who have already successfully completed courses in both Approach and Area Procedural (non-radar) to Execute Radar Control of air traffic within an Approach and /or Area Radar sector to the standard required by the concerned licensing Authority.

Course Objectives

On completion of the course, the Trainee will be able to:

  • Explain the principles of operation of primary and secondary surveillance Radar (SSR) systems.
  • Describe the factors which may affect the performance of primary and Secondary Surveillance Radar System.
  • Describe the methods of displaying SSR derived information.
  • operate radar equipment in accordance to ATC MATC 2 Sect. 5.
  • Update and maintain a traffic display to the required standard of accuracy.
  • Identify radar targets using radar display in accordance with published procedures.
  • Apply standard phraseology pertaining to radar control.
  • Vector aircraft within radar control sector.
  • Maintain the prescribed radar and/or non-radar separation.
  • Sequence and maintain a safe, orderly and expeditions flow of air traffic.
  • Monitor known air traffic to provide aircraft concerned with information
    or advice relative to any significant deviations from their ATC clearances.
  • Carry out transfer of radar identity/control including coordination with
    Aerodrome-Approach-Area control. Adjacent ACCs/sectors or other
    ATC units in accordance to published procedures.
  • Take appropriate action in the event of a miss-approach aircraft,
    diversion aircraft, radio communication failure, radar equipment failure
    and emergency aircraft.

The trainee should have successfully completed course in:

  1. approach and area procedural (non-radar) course.
  2. the trainees should have command of the language of instructions.

Trainee The course is designed for participants who have a basic aeronautical telecommunication operation (ICAO code 172) and who are employed by civil aviation authority and working at the AFTN center. 
Course Aim

The ultimate aims of the course are: 

  1. type a complete AFTN message in accordance with Annex 10 Vol. 2 chapter 4. (MESSAGE FORMAT)
  2. Originate, prepare and disseminate service messages which related to all aspects of the AFTN communication center in accordance with annex 10 vol. 2 chapter 4 and manual on the planning and engineering of the aeronautical fixed telecommunication network (8259). 
  3. make compete, correct and clear entries in the written logs aviation in the AFTN center (Annex 10 vol. 2).
  4. to deal with the rejected messages in accordance with the diagnostic header line ( messir user’s manual). 
  5. employment the routing directory of the AFTN com center and apply the diversion procedures when necessary. (8259)
